Chief Robert Kanatewat Exceptional Journey Celebrated

Statement from the Office of the Chief

“The Lieutenant Governor’s First Peoples Medal recognizes individuals who have made remarkable contributions and who have dedicated their careers to their people. On this very special afternoon in Quebec City, among other First Nations recipients, Mr. Robert Kanatewat was honoured with this very prestigious medal. We extend our congratulations to him, and to all recipients!

We could not imagine anyone more suitable than Mr. Kanatewat to achieve this honour today. A former Chief who dedicated over fifty years to serve the people of the Cree Nation of Chisasibi, as well as Eeyouch across our territory. A trailblazer and inspirational figure to so many across Eeyou Istchee, and beyond. An original signatory of the James Bay and Northern Quebec Agreement (JBNQA).

Robert has accomplished much for the Cree Nation, with enough stories to fill many books. We honour his valuable knowledge, his sheer persistence, and his effective leadership that he continues to contribute to this day. Mr. Kanatewat’s accomplishments during his career are phenomenal and historic. He continues to work for Eeyouch present-day. He is tireless and always gives back to his people. We are so very proud of him.

On behalf of the Council of the Cree Nation of Chisasibi, we congratulate Robert on this well-deserved, once-in-a lifetime achievement. Without him, we simply would not be where we are today.”
