Violet Pachanos

The Council of the Cree Nation of Chisasibi wishes to deliver the following congratulatory message to Violet Pachanos, recipient of the Lieutenant Governor of Québec's First Peoples Medal:

“This afternoon in Quebec City, Ms. Violet Pachanos was awarded the Lieutenant Governor’s First Peoples Medal. The Council of the Cree Nation of Chisasibi extends its sincere congratulations to her on this achievement. Today, we are beaming with pride and cheering her on as we witness her receive this once-in-a-lifetime honour.

The Lieutenant Governor’s First Peoples Medal recognizes individuals who address the social, cultural, and economic challenges of First Peoples. It’s awarded to people who have made outstanding contributions to their people. And Violet fits this description accurately.

It is no secret that Ms. Pachanos is an original trailblazer for Eeyou Iskwauuch. Never mind history – she has made ‘herstory’ multiple times throughout her life and political career. Firstly, by being the first woman to be elected Chief of the Cree Nation of Chisasibi, then being the first woman to be elected Deputy Grand Chief of Eeyou Istchee.

As we reflect on her achievement today, we want to acknowledge the impact Violet has made on our entire Cree Nation. Being a woman – let alone the first – that pursues a career in such a male-dominated field is not for the faint-hearted. Taking on these roles costs an enormous amount of courage and significant pressure. As we honour our former Chief, we also thank her for her determination, strength, and for paving the path forward for Eeyou Iskwaauch.

On behalf of the Council of the Cree Nation of Chisasibi, we congratulate Violet on this achievement and honour. We cannot think of anyone more deserving of this recognition than her.”
